I. The Law of Terroir

The soil of KwaZulu-Natal is the only place on earth where the original Durban Poison exists. Terroir is not a theory — it is a legal principle proven across the world. Champagne belongs to Champagne. Cognac belongs to Cognac. Rooibos belongs to the Cederberg. The courts have ruled consistently: the soil, the climate, the hands that cultivate, the generations of knowledge — these cannot be packaged and exported in a seed.

Durban Poison belongs to KwaZulu-Natal. The plant is inseparable from its origin. It is not a recipe. It is a place.

All Durban Poison® is pure Sativa — but not all pure Sativa is Durban Poison®. You can take our seeds anywhere in the world and grow something. What you cannot take is the soil, the subtropical coastal air, the rainfall, and the centuries of cultivation knowledge held by the growers of KZN. That is what makes it Durban Poison.

II. The AOC Standard

We are building the equivalent of Champagne's AOC — for KwaZulu-Natal. France's Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée exists to protect what terroir creates. Geography is not a marketing claim — it is a verifiable, legally defensible fact of origin and quality.

The iNkosi yeSativa Co-operative is building that same standard for Durban Poison — owned not by any company, but collectively by the growers of KwaZulu-Natal. Every member is a shareholder. Every shareholder owns a stake in the name, the standard, and the future.

"Only product grown, harvested, processed and certified within the geographic boundaries of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, under the oversight of the iNkosi yeSativa Co-operative, may bear the name Durban Poison Official."
