Grown outdoors, rain-fed and sun-dried, by small-scale growers in the region using methods passed down through generations. iNkosi yeSativa (The King of Sativa) Co-operative is being established so those growers own the brand their families built. | Origin protection status | Geographical Indication (GI) protection for "Durban Poison" is being pursued by iNkosi yeSativa Co-op.— nothing has granted yet, and while professional legal advice suggests this is achievable, no outcome can ever be guaranteed. Unlike a commercial trademark, a GI isn't owned by one company for private profit. Like Champagne, it allows SA growers and manufacturers within the Co-op.to use the name and profit from it together, as equal shareholders.
